Ecuador were eliminated from the 2011 U-20 World Cup on Wednesday after a 1-0 defeat to France in the round of 16.
Sixto Vizuete’s side had a better of the first half, with only the profligacy of Marlon de Jesus and a good performance from the French goalkeeper Jonathan Ligali preventing Ecuador from going in ahead at the interval.
Edson Montano wasted a good opportunity presented to him by Marcos Caicedo early on second half, but France grew into the match and scored the winner fifteen minutes from time. Ecuador goalkeeper John Jaramillo was unable to hold a fairly weak effort from Antoine Griezmann, simply presenting the ball back to the French forward, who easily finished.
Ecuador were unable to force an equaliser and were thus eliminated. This was only the second time Ecuador have qualified for the competition and they matched their previous performance, which came in the 2001 edition held in Argentina.
