Colombia’s dreams of winning the 2011 U-20 World Cup on home soil ended with a 3-1 defeat to Mexico on Saturday at the quarter final stage of the competition.

Colombia started well, but an expectant Bogota crowd were silenced 38 minutes in when Mexico were awarded a penalty after a coming together in the area and Erick Torres calmly dispatched past Cristian Bonilla’s dive.

They were given something to cheer about on the hour when Daniel Zapata’s low long range effort inexplicably slipped under the Mexican goalkeeper Jose Rodriguez for 1-1, but were soon hushed once more when Edson Rivera headed home from a corner to restore Mexico’s lead.

Colombia pushed for an equaliser, but none was forthcoming and Mexico sealed the victory two minutes from time when Bonilla could only parry Rivera’s powerful effort into the back of the net.
