The final two matches in the first round of the Copa Sudamericana were completed this week – bizarrely enough in the same week that Brazilian sides played out their second round matches, but that’s South American planning for you! – with La Equidad and Santa Fe of Colombia both defeating Peruvian opposition to secure their places in the round of 32.
Santa Fe progressed following a 2-0 home victory over Universidad Cesar Vallejo, giving them a 3-1 aggregate success. The goals were scored by the evergreen Sergio Galvan Rey and Oscar Rodas. Galvan Rey’s goal is particularly worthy of a watch.
La Equidad followed up their 2-0 home win in the first leg with a 2-1 away victory in the second over Juan Aurich. Mauricio Montes had put Juan Aurich 1-0 up in the opening quarter hour, but that was all the hosts could muster as goals in the final fifteen minutes from Victor Guaza and Juan Nunez secured progression for the team led by Colombian national team candidate Alexis Garcia.
With the first round now out the way, the second round fixtures involving teams from the Andean nations are as follows:
Nacional Asuncion (Paraguay) vs Aurora (Bolivia)
Anzoategui (Venezuela) vs Univeristario (Peru)
Olimpia (Paraguay) vs Emelec (Ecuador)
LDU Quito (Ecuador) vs Trujillanos (Venezuela)
La Equidad (Colombia) vs Libertad (Paraguay)
Santa Fe (Colombia) vs Deportivo Cali (Colombia)
The Sudamericana takes a somewhat scattershot approach to scheduling and thus the first and second legs of each of these ties occur at different times. The only two with first legs occurring next week are Nacional vs Aurora (Tuesday) and Anzoategui vs Universitario (Thursday)
