It was a high scoring start to the second half of the 2011 Colombian league season with 21 goals scored across the eight matches played on the opening weekend of the Torneo Finalizacion.

Apertura champions Atletico Nacional recorded their first opening day victory since the 2007 Apertura with a 3-1 win away to Envigado. Atletico took an early lead through Edwin Cardona, but Envigado had the better of the first half and got the just reward their slick midfield interchanges deserved when Jorge Serna equalised just before the half hour mark. Atletico gained the upper hand after the break when they switched formation from 4-3-1-2 to 4-2-3-1 and scored twice through Carlos Renteria and Diego Alvarez to secure the three points.

Torrential rain saw Once Caldas’ clash with Boyaca Chico suspended after three minutes of play, but the players returned to the field an hour later and put on a good show with an entertaining match that saw three goals in as many first half minutes and resulted in Once Caldas winning 3-1 – Jose Moreno scoring twice.

Real Cartagena and Santa Fe lead the way on goal difference following the first round of fixtures, with both coming out 3-0 victors.

Real Cartagena were well deserved winners in the clasico costeno away to Junior of Barranquilla. The away side dominated from the off and should really have been a couple of goals to the good even before David Silva blasted them ahead with a spectacular long range strike in the 35th minute. Goals from John Hernandez and Edison Palomino either side of a Junior penalty saved by Adrian Berbia secured the victory.

Santa Fe’s three-goal victory at home to Deportes Tolima was thanks in part to a superb performance from their debutant Jonathan Copete, who laid on the opening two goals for Oscar Rodas and Luis Seijas. Rodas scored his second before half time with a well placed finish following a goal mouth scramble as Santa Fe cruised to victory. Seijas, a Venezuelan midfielder, is expected to complete a move to Belgium’s Standard Liege before the European transfer window closes on Wednesday.

In the remaining matches, La Equidad suffered a surprising 2-0 loss at home to Deportivo Pereira, Medellin and Deportivo Cali recorded 1-0 wins over Itagui and Cucuta Deportivo respectively, and Atletico Hulia were 2-1 victors over Millonarios.

The match between Deportes Quindio and America de Cali was postponed.
