Alianza Lima extended their lead at the top of the table to four points as many of the other contenders lost ground in an exciting 20th round of matches in the Peruvian league.

Alianza won 4-2 at home to Inti Gas with Johnnier Montano’s strike for 3-1 the pick of the bunch. Montano was making his first appearance for Alianza in a year after spending last season at the Turkish side Konyaspor, but is unlikely to stick around for long as his agent hopes to secure a deal with a European club before the 31st August transfer deadline.

Second placed Juan Aurich lost 2-1 away to Leon de Huanuco, Cienciano lost 3-1 away to Alianza Atletico in a scrappy encounter played out in front of a deserted stadium, and Universitario were also defeated on the road, losing 1-0 to Sport Huancayo, who were the big winners of the weekend’s action, their three points moving them up into third place.

Sporting Cristal were unable to build on their first win in 11 matches last weekend, going down 1-0 to Union Comercio. Union scored their winning goal in the 58th minute through Roberto Jimenez, after which Cristal laid siege on the home goal, only failing to equalise due to some dreadful finishing.

Cristal now lie 14th, one place above the relegation zone on goal difference and with a tough match away to Cienciano to come when the league resumes following the international break.

In the remaining matches, Sport Boys defeated Cobresal 1-0, Melgar beat Universidad Cesar Vallejo 3-0 and Universidad San Martin came out 1-0 victors at home to CNI.
