Peruvian side Universitario have one foot in the last sixteen of the Copa Sudamericana after they won 2-1 away to Anzoategui of Venezuela in the first leg of their second round tie.
A superbly taken goal from youngster Alvaro Ampuero gave Univeristario a first half lead, which they added to shortly after half time thanks to veteran striker Johan Fano, who headed home Andy Polo’s cross. Anzoategui did at least get on the score-sheet through Armando Maita but now face an uphill battle to overcome their first leg deficit.
In the only other match this week featuring an Andean team, Aurora of Bolivia got an encouraging 1-1 draw away to Nacional of Paraguay to give themselves a good chance of progressing.
Aurora raced into an early lead when their Paraguayan striker Aquilino Villalba headed home an inswinging cross from the right, and continued to threaten on the counter-attack as Nacional poured forward in search of an equaliser. They did, finally, equalise in the 68th minute when Aurora’s goalkeeper Pablo Lanz made a hash of coming to collect a long ball forward, simply dropping it into the path of Javier Gonzalez, who finished into the empty net.
